Ministry of Environment Launches Plastic Reduction Campaign in Cambodian Schools

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - In a significant move toward environmental sustainability, His Excellency Eng Sophallet, the Minister of the Ministry of Environment, has instructed the Ministry to launch a campaign aimed at reducing plastic usage in schools across Cambodia.

During a meeting with the management, government officials, and park rangers of the Koh Kong Department of Environment on September 3, 2023, Minister Eng Sophallet urged the Koh Kong Department of Environment to spearhead this initiative, particularly targeting teachers and students. The campaign, titled "Today, I Won't Use Plastic," is set to begin in schools across all districts and cities.

Minister Eng Sophallet stressed the importance of students and teachers committing to reducing plastic usage, even if just for one or two days a week. He highlighted that this collective effort could lead to a significant reduction in plastic waste, ultimately contributing to environmental hygiene and a sustainable future for Cambodia.

The "Campaign to Reduce Plastic Bags" aligns with global efforts to combat plastic pollution and complies with Government Sub-Decree No. 14 on Plastic Bag Management and Government Policy. It is a crucial step toward achieving the government's threefold strategy, emphasizing growth, jobs, equity, efficiency, and sustainability, ultimately positioning Cambodia as a middle-income country by 2030 and working toward the ambitious Cambodia Vision.

Plastic pollution is a pressing global issue, and Cambodia is no exception. Studies conducted by the Ministry of Environment have revealed that, on average, individuals in Phnom Penh and major cities use a substantial number of plastic bags. Even in smaller towns and rural areas, the average remains high. Phnom Penh alone generates approximately 3,500 tons of waste daily, with 20% consisting of plastic waste.

The plastic reduction campaign, launched on September 1, 2023, began in five schools in the Ou Rang Ov district of Tbong Khmom province, involving a total of 15,000 students. The primary objective is to foster environmental consciousness and protect Cambodia's natural beauty for the benefit of all its citizens.
